Coherent Learning Pathways in Computational Competencies
Over the past years, the Computational Competencies initiative has aimed to establish coherent learning pathways that enable students to develop robust data-driven and model-based reasoning skills across their programmes. In this Refresh Teaching session, we will look at how a shared competency framework provides a common language for planning these pathways and for integrating Computational Competencies into the curriculum. One example from Civil Engineering shows how the programme has aligned and sequenced its courses in programming, data analysis and modelling so that these elements build up consecutively across the curriculum and connect effectively to the disciplinary content. In Earth Sciences, computational methods are introduced in a discipline-specific context in the first semester and subsequently reinforced through repeated application and deepening within diverse course settings. The session will conclude with an input on CodeExpert as an integrated digital environment that supports students in practising computational thinking and modelling in foundational courses.
