Designing Engaging Learning Experiences
Digital technologies offer far more than new ways of distributing teaching materials—they enable entirely new ways of learning. In this Refresh Teaching session, ETH lecturers present practical examples of how they have redesigned learning resources and learning activities to foster student engagement, self-directed learning, and active participation. The session features innovative approaches to curated learning resources, interactive textbook reading, and virtual laboratory preparation, offering inspiration for colleagues interested in designing engaging learning experiences.
Reinventing textbook reading with IRead
How can digital tools encourage students to engage more actively with textbook content? In the Production and Operations Management course, IRead transforms traditional textbook reading into an interactive learning experience through knowledge visualisation and AI-supported features. Prof. Torbjörn Netland and Nils Löwhagen will share practical experiences from implementing IRead in the course, including its benefits and challenges for student learning.
From virtual preparation to hands-on laboratory learning
How can virtual labs help students prepare more effectively for hands-on experiments? As part of the redesign of the General Chemistry Practical Course, LabBuddy is used to guide students through experiment design and protocol development before they enter the laboratory. Alexander and Dimitry will share how this combination of guided self-study and hands-on practice aims to reduce cognitive overload in the lab, make better use of laboratory time, and support deeper learning.
Leganto Reading Lists
Would you like to make it easier for your students to access the course readings and materials?Join Salome Zehnder from ETH Library for a practical introduction to Leganto, where you will learn the essential steps for creating and managing reading lists and integrating them into your Moodle course environment. Then, hear from Katja Köhler from D-BIOL who will share her experiences using Leganto in teaching and how it helps improve access to resources, course organization, and student engagement.
